TASTE THE TERRITORY

In the heart of the Kootenays, we’re surrounded by nature’s gifts. In every direction, there’s a bounty of fare that nourishes our souls and replenishes our spirits. We know the territory intimately. We know what each season brings. And we know that at the end of a long day of adventures, the last thing you want to do is stop exploring.

Après Matters

At The Josie, we believe a post-adventure beverage is more than just a drink. It’s a time to swap stories with friends, new and old, to rest those tired bones, and an occasion to raise a glass to the day’s accomplishments. Even if the only thing you accomplished was après itself.

Here’s to Our History

Much like The Josie, The Velvet restaurant received its name from the legend of one of Rossland’s most remarkable residents, Olaus Jeldness. Mine developer and skier extraordinaire, Olaus Jeldness arrived in the town in 1894, following several years of mining in various U.S. states after a move from his native Norway. It was here that he settled and found himself as the co-discoverer of one of his most valuable mines, the Velvet.

During his time in Rossland he developed a reputation as one of the town’s most legendary skiers; famous for his daring runs on 3 metre-long skis. Jeldness was also known for his mountaintop tea parties, most notably the one he threw after the sale of the Velvet, thus inspiring the name of the Josie’s restaurant. Cheers, Olaus.
